  • Position: bright light
  • Soil: compost supplied
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: typically March to April, but depends when planted
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

When planted up, these can be lined up on a bright windowsill where they will offer a bright splash of early colour. They are ideal for both the novice and more experienced gardener, and children in particular will love to watch them grow!

The kit contains one pot for blue freesias, one pot for pink ranunculus and one pot for white anemones. It also comes with the bulbs (or corms), dehydrated peat-free compost pellets and clear instructions on how to put them all together to create a beautiful display for your home.

  • Growing instructions: To make the compost, place the pellets in a suitable mixing container and add 900ml of lukewarm water. Allow to stand and expand for 30-60 minutes, before draining off any excess water and mixing well. You may have more compost than you require and more water could be required if the compost mix is looking dry.
To help them get established, soak the Anemone corms in water for 2-3 hours prior to planting (the others can be potted straight up), and plant from March onwards. Start by partially filling each pot with the expanded compost and placing the bulbs (one variety per pot) as follows:

Freesia - 5cm deep and pointy side up
Ranunculus - 5cm deep and with their talon-like fingers facing downwards
Anemone - 5cm deep as they fall

Cover the bulbs with more compost, and water sparingly so the compost is is just moist but never waterlogged. Place the pots in a light position and maintain temperatures around 18-20C. Typically, the bulbs will flower approximately 8-12 weeks from planting, however this will depend upon the growing conditions. Once they have started to flower, move them to a cool, bright spot to help prolong the display. As the flowers will tend to grow towards the light source (window), the pots should be turned every few days. After they have finished flowering, the bulbs can be planted out in the garden.
If you are unable to plant these up immediately upon receipt, they should be stored in a cool, dry place.
