  • This captivating Japanese maple offers year-round interest with its striking seasonal transformations. Acer palmatum 'Beni-kawa', a close relative of the popular 'Sango Kaku', distinguishes itself by growing slightly taller. Its 5-lobed leaves unfurl in a delicate pinkish-yellow hue, transitioning to bright green in summer before erupting into vibrant bronzed oranges and yellows in autumn. Small reddish-purple flowers in spring give way to winged fruits later in the year. However, the tree's true showstopper is its brilliant coral-red stems, most dramatic when winter sunshine illuminates the bare branches. Thriving in well-drained, moist soils and adaptable to full sun or partial shade, this multi-season wonder is an excellent choice for small gardens - its compact size and multi-seasonal appeal make it perfect for creating focal points in Japanese-inspired landscapes or adding architectural interest to mixed borders.

  • Garden care:
Add a top-dressing of a well-balanced fertiliser around the base of a newly planted tree in late spring and keep well watered. No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant.
