The elegant flowerspike of this cultivar is crowded with rusty orange buds opening to peach-flushed, golden-yellow flowers. A relatively compact form, Eremurus × isabellinus 'Pinokkio' tolerates more exposed positions where it will put on an eye-catching display.

Foxtail lilies need to be planted in fertile but well-drained soil with the crown not far below soil level. They start to grow in late winter and spring, gathering their strength before they produce their towering flower spikes in summer. Each flower spike has hundreds of flowers which open from the bottom upwards, creating a stunning effect.

They thrive in the sunniest spot in the garden, especially if the base of the plant isn't shaded as this can decrease the number of flowering spikes produced.

  • Garden care:
Eremurus thrive in well-drained soil, ideally in a sunny spot. When planting, ensure you provide a deep planting hole with sharp grit or sand at the bottom to improve drainage. Space plants around 30-45 cm (12-18 in) apart to allow for their large flower spikes. Water well after planting and ensure the soil remains moist, but not waterlogged, during the growing season.

Deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant looking tidy, but leave the foliage to die back naturally, as it helps the plant store energy for the following season.

In frost-prone areas, protect the plant with dry mulch in late Autumn, such as strulch, fern leaves or composted pine needles, to ensure survival through winter.

Every three to five years, lift and divide congested clumps in September, replanting the strongest crowns on a layer of sharp grit.
