This striking perennial showcases an intense display of deep burgundy-red pincushion blooms, making it one of the most vivid astrantia cultivars available. Astrantia major 'Star of Love' forms a lush mound of bright green, palmate, deeply lobed foliage, providing a stunning backdrop for its long season floral display. The flowers, borne on erect, dark purple stems, feature a central cluster of tiny red-tipped florets that mature to green-white, surrounded by a crown of lance-shaped, deep red bracts with even darker tips. Like all astrantias, it excels in partially shaded borders, woodland gardens, and cottage-style plantings, where its dramatic hues and textural appeal can be fully appreciated. Its compact habit and long-lasting blooms also make it an excellent choice for cut flower arrangements, adding depth and sophistication to both fresh and dried bouquets.

  • Garden care:
Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather, especially newly established plants. Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant. Divided specimens may take some time to establish since they don't like having their roots disturbed. Astrantia thrive in consistently moist soils and perform best in cool, partially shaded summer conditions.
