  • Large, pointed leaves spiral out in a compact mound, each one marked with deep, wine-red centres that bleed into silvery-grey margins for a dramatic, flame-like effect that instantly lifts a shady corner.

The glossy surface and subtle texture make it a natural focal point for a desk, shelf or side table where light is bright but indirect. In cooler months, delicate pink flowers can appear above the foliage, adding a soft contrast to the richly coloured leaves without stealing the show.

Begonia ‘Sangria’ thrives in a warm room away from cold draughts, and prefers bright, lightly filtered light rather than direct sun. Grow it in free-draining compost, keep the soil just moist, and you’ll have an easy-care houseplant that brings strong colour, structure and reliable indoor interest throughout the year.

  • Home care:
Rex begonias require special care during the summer months. It's best to keep them in shaded areas and provide ample watering, ensuring proper drainage and maintaining a humid atmosphere around the plants. Avoid wetting the leaves or the crown.

As winter approaches, reduce the frequency of watering. Allow the compost surface to dry out before watering again. These begonias thrive with a minimum winter temperature of 13°C (55°F) across all varieties.

For optimal growth, feed them every two weeks from May to September using a high nitrogen fertiliser.
