Herald the beginning of the flowering climber season with the Award-Winning Spring Flowering Clematis Collection. Bursting into life from early to late spring, this trio offers a stunning mix of soft blue, pure white, and vibrant cherry pink flowers to brighten walls, fences, and pergolas. These reliable, vigorous climbers thrive in shady spots, making them perfect for north or east-facing gardens.
The collection contains one each of the plants listed below, each in a 9cm pot.
Clematis 'Frankie': An RHS award-winning cultivar, offering charm with its broad, bell-shaped flowers in shades of light to mid-blue that appear in early spring. Its mid-green leaves create a fresh backdrop for the soft blue blooms, making it a standout choice for brightening north or east-facing walls. Grows to 2.5m.
Clematis montana var. grandiflora: Exquisite, pure white, late spring and early summer flowers with yellow centres and dark green leaves. This extremely vigorous clematis is excellent for training over a pergola or covering an unsightly wall, fence or garden shed. It's an ideal climber for a north-facing site. Grows to 10m.
Clematis 'Freda': Beautiful, bright cherry pink flowers in May and June amid purple-flushed, mid-green leaves. The award-winning Clematis 'Freda' is ideal for covering a wall or fence in a north-facing site. Grows to 5m.
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these climbers in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles.
No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds.
Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
