A deciduous shrub or small, spreading tree from woodland China, with dark green, oval, toothed leaves and pendant spring to early summer flowers that are white, star-shaped, and best admired when viewing from below. Egg-shaped, woody fruits can develop later in the season. As with other members of the Styrax family of plants, Sinojackia prefers a lime-free soil and a sheltered location, with dappled shade being preferable to full sun. Resistant to deer.
Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered spot with protection from cold, drying winds, using moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil that drains well. Water regularly through its first couple of years, then as needed in dry spells, and mulch each spring to help conserve moisture and keep the roots cool.
Sinojackia needs very little pruning – just remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late winter to keep a tidy framework, as it flowers on older wood.
