Often flowering over an incredibly long period, this hard-working, undemanding shrub is ideal for sunny spots - and will usually flourish where little else will grow. Forming a low, spreading mound, the rich green foliage of Potentilla fruticosa Bella Lindsey acts as the perfect backdrop for the bright yellow flowers, which will look great when teamed with oranges, reds, purples and blues.
Plant woody shrub cinquefoil in full sun and well-drained soil, as they flower most freely in bright conditions and dislike sitting in wet ground. Water regularly during their first year to help them establish, then only during extended dry spells once mature. In spring, apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure to keep the soil in good condition and conserve moisture.
After flowering, trim the plant lightly, removing weak or spindly shoots and cutting a few of the oldest stems back to the base to keep a neat shape and encourage fresh growth.
