Paulownia elongata 'Futuro' is an exceptionally fast-growing deciduous tree with a unique ability to absorb up to five times more CO2 than typical typical trees, making it a sustainable choice for eco-conscious gardeners. This non-invasive, regenerative tree features upright growth with straight stems, and its wood is light yet sturdy, ideal for various applications. From an early age (around 4 years in ideal conditions), it produces beautiful pink-purple, bee-friendly flowers each spring. Reaching heights of 10-12m in its native eastern Asia, this tree is suitable for large gardens or parkland, where it can also be managed by stooling (cutting back to just above ground) every few years in late winter or early spring.

  • Garden care:
When planting Paulownia, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil, as this tree thrives in full sun and can tolerate a range of soil types, though it prefers loamy soil. Water the tree regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, but once established, it becomes more drought-tolerant. To maintain a multi-stemmed form, stool the tree by cutting it back to the ground every 1 to 2 years in late winter or early spring. This encourages the growth of multiple vigorous stems from the base, resulting in a bushier, multi-stemmed form, helps to control the size of the tree and promotes larger leaves, which is often desired for ornamental purposes. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular pruning of dead or damaged branches in winter will also keep the tree looking its best.
