In this collection you will receive one packet of approximately 20 seeds of each of the following three varieties (approximately 60 seeds).

  • Lathyrus odoratus 'Top Hat': Described as a strong dark blue, ‘Top Hat’ is a stunning sweet pea with hints of deep purple, lilac and mauve. Introduced by Macdonald around 1942, this marvelous, floriferous modern grandiflora sweet pea has large, fabulously fragrant blooms and long flowering stems - perfect for cut flowers, this annual climber will be ‘Putting on the Ritz’, dancing over your teepees and trellises for a wonderful summertime show! Grows to 1.8m

  • Lathyrus odoratus 'Eclipse': ‘Eclipse’ is an impressive, large-flowered and highly scented Spencer-type sweet pea with mauve-pink blooms. Excellent grown as a cut flower, over time these pinkish blooms darken to purple with age, adding to their appeal. Provide a trellis, obelisk or similar supportive framework for this fabulously floriferous annual climber to scramble up. Grows to 2.5m.

  • Lathyrus odoratus 'Matucana': Masses of highly fragrant, bi-coloured blooms appear from June to September adding colour and sweet perfume to the garden. This old-fashioned variety is renowned for its deliciously scented and very beautiful lilac and mauve flowers. It was first introduced to Britain in 1700, and it's perfect for training over a wigwam of bamboo canes in a sunny, well-drained site. Grows to 2m.

  • Garden care:
Gradually harden off the seedlings before planting them out into well-prepared soil, enriched with lots of well-rotted organic matter. Pinch out the growing tips of the young plants as they grow to encourage bushier growth, and provide support for the stems. Apply a balanced liquid plant food every two weeks while in growth. Removing the faded flowers before they set seed will encourage even more to form - which makes them perfect for adding to vases or posies.

  • Sowing instructions:
From October to late February, sow seeds into deep pots or root trainers filled with good-quality seed compost and place them in a cold frame. Then, after the worst frosts have passed, the seedlings can either be planted out or potted up for the patio. Alternatively, direct sowings can be made in October, or March to April.
