Spring arrives in style with pendant clusters of double blooms that shift gently in colour as they mature, creating a soft, layered display that is reliable, eye-catching and easy to place.
Prunus sumaura fugenzo ‘Japanese Lantern’, is a distinctive ornamental cherry that first appeared in Japan as a natural sport and stands out for its complex, lantern-like flowers, each packed with a multitude of silky petals. The blooms open in creamy white to pale yellow-green before gradually flushing pink, all held in elegant hanging groups of five that show beautifully against emerging copper-tinted leaves.
As the season moves on, foliage deepens to fresh green, then turns warm orange in autumn, giving this medium-sized, spreading tree real presence beyond its spring show. It suits lawns (we recommend a mulched planting pit diameter of at least 1m) or mixed borders as a focal point and copes well with clay or chalk soils, showing good frost tolerance and strong resistance to common blossom and leaf issues.

When planting your ornamental cherry, prepare a hole up to three times the diameter of its root system. Fork over the base of the pit in readiness, incorporating plenty of organic matter into the backfill and planting hole.
Avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil, trees should be planted out as they arrive. If you've ordered a bare root tree, soak the roots in a bucket of water for half an hour prior to planting, or if this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily, covering their roots with soil, or potted up.
Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom. Lightly prune in summer to reduce the risk of silver leaf and bacterial canker, to retain an open shape and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
