The award-winning 'Canary Bird' is a semi-evergreen shrub with maple-like leaves and nodding, bell-shaped lemon yellow blooms that flower from early summer to the first frosts. It's ideal for growing against a south-facing wall, but Abutilon 'Canary Bird' can also be grown in a large pot and overwintered in a conservatory.

  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: moderately fertile, freely draining
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: June to October
  • Hardiness: half hardy (will need protection in winter)

Plant in freely-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil that has been enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Lightly trim back shoots that spoil the symmetry in mid- or late spring. Water freely during the summer months, but keep drier and protect from low temperatures in winter. In colder regions, consider potting it up into a large container so it can be moved to a frost-free spot when the temperatures drop.

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
