  • This stunning peony collection blends rich cerise-purple, soft rose pink, andpure white blooms for a striking yet elegant display. Bursting into flowerfrom early to midsummer, these peonies offer a luxurious mix of bold colourand delicate charm, with their full, fragrant blooms standing tall above lushgreen foliage.

Peonies are loved for their bold, dissected foliage and extremely beautiful, showy flowers, which are ideal for adding colour to mixed, herbaceous or shrubborders in spring and summer.

Originating from woodland clearings, grasslandand meadows, the tuberous roots of the herbaceous forms act as storagetissue, which allows the mature plants to become drought tolerant onceestablished. They will thrive in deep fertile soils that are moist but welldrained, and although tolerant of some light shade, they perform best in fullsun.Long-lived clump-forming perennials, they can resent being moved,

although this can usually be done quite successfully if tackled in autumn. Some may require staking to support the weight of the flowers.

In each collection you will receive 3 Paeonia bare root plants - 1 of eachof the following varieties:

  • Paeonia 'Red Sarah Bernhardt':Producing an abundance of lightly scented flowers in early summer, thiswonderful peony will offer lashings of colour for both the border and thevase. First introduced in China in 1980, its name may hint at it being ared-flowered version of the ever-popular 'Sarah Bernhart', however it reallyreally is quite unique, and despite its name, the flowers are morecerise-purple than red. It packs a punch in the border, andonce established, it will keep coming back year after year.Grows to 100cm.

  • Paeonia 'Sarah Bernhardt':Enormous, rose pink, fragrant, double summer flowers and mid-green leaves. Thismagnificent, late-flowering, pale pink peony has been popular since theEdwardian era. To support the large flowers stake in spring using bamboo canesor metal link stakes. An excellent specimen plant for a partially sunny border.Grows to 100cm.

  • Paeonia 'Duchesse de Nemours':Producing huge, bowl-shaped pure white, fragrant, double flowers, flushed greenin bud, from early to midsummer. This classic, double-flowered peony from themid-nineteenth century is a favourite of the cut flower trade. It will thrivein full sun or partial shade. Fill the bare ground around the peony before theleaves appear with spring bulbs to prolong the season of interest.Grows to 80cm.

  • Garden care:
Where available, bare root peonies should be planted out or potted up as soonas possible, avoiding frosty or waterlogged conditions. Choose a sunny,well-drained position, as peonies flower best in full sun and dislike beingmoved once established.

Plant all peonies into well-prepared soil, ensuring the highest bud on thecrown is no deeper than 5cm (2in) below the surface. For newly plantedplants, protect emerging shoots from late frosts in their first spring.Keep plants well watered and fed during growth, using balanced, slow-releasefertiliser rather than high-nitrogen feeds, and remove spent flowers oncefaded.

Mulch with well-rotted compost or manure, support tall stems to preventflopping, maintain good air circulation, and remove any yellowing or diseasedleaves. Avoid disturbing established crowns, as peonies dislike being movedmay take a season or two to establish.
