Fancy a melon you can bite straight into? This compact, high-yielding plant produces clusters of small, round fruits with glowing honey-yellow skins so thin you can eat them whole, no peeling required. Just slice or crunch in, scoop out the seeds if you wish, and enjoy the sweet, fragrant flesh that delivers proper summer flavour in every mouthful.

Each plant can produce up to eighteen fruits, typically weighing around 100-150g (up to 5oz), making them ideal for snacking, lunchboxes or adding to fresh fruit salads. The vines stay manageable, so they suit large pots, raised beds or greenhouse growing, and perform especially well in greenhouses, polytunnels or a sunny, sheltered spot outdoors.

Melon ‘Honey Drops Dara’ thrives in warmth, so keep temperatures above 15°C (59°F) while plants establish, use free-draining, moisture-retentive compost, and water consistently without soaking the roots. Give it support as it grows, plenty of sunshine and a bit of patience, and you’ll be picking armfuls of sweet, aromatic mini melons straight from your own garden.

  • Garden care:
At 4-5 leaf stage, place 45cm (18in) apart in the greenhouse, training main stems vertically up wires, remove the growing point at approx. 7th leaf stage on in a cold frame, limit growth to the size of frame. Alternatively, space 75cm apart in a warm, sunny sheltered position outside. Once fruiting begins apply a liquid feed once a week.

Sow singly into pots, edge down into the compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost and firm gently. Cover pots with glass, polythene or propagator lid. Keep at 20-25°C (68-77°F) and keep moist. Remove cover when seedlings appear.

  • Sow: February to April

  • Harvest: July to October
