Fragrant, foxglove-like, pinkish-lilac flowers appear on bare stems in May, followed by large, heart-shaped, bright green leaves. This spectacular deciduous tree looks lovely set in the middle of a large, sunny lawn. A highly recommended plant, Paulownia tomentosa flowers best in areas with long, hot summers, and copes well with urban pollution - although it may take several years to establish before flowering.
When planting Paulownia, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil, as this tree thrives in full sun and can tolerate a range of soil types, though it prefers loamy soil. Water the tree regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, but once established, it becomes more drought-tolerant.
To maintain a multi-stemmed form, stool the tree by cutting it back to the ground every 1 to 2 years in late winter or early spring. This encourages the growth of multiple vigorous stems from the base, resulting in a bushier, multi-stemmed form, helps to control the size of the tree and promotes larger leaves, which is often desired for ornamental purposes.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Regular pruning of dead or damaged branches in winter will also keep the tree looking its best.
