Intriguing and exotic-looking flowers appear in a rounded umbel in autumn, adding much-needed late colour to sheltered borders or pots. Nativeto arid habitats in southern Africa, these bulbous perennialsare hardy but will need a sunny position, ideally with the protection of asouth-facing wall. Excellent for cutting and adding to a vase, they can also be grown in pots and brought inside for a short periodwhile in flower.
In each collection you will receive the following:
- 1 × Nerine bowdenii:Up to nine slender pointed buds open in succession to bright pink flowers, which have a deep pink stripe down the centre of each tepal. An elegant, late-flowering addition to the herbaceous border or patio.Grows to 50cm.
- 1 × Nerine bowdenii 'Isabel':Bring late-season colour to your garden with striking clusters of darkrose-pink, lily-like flowers held aloft on upright stems. Each bloom measures6-8cm (3in) across, with elegant, wavy, reflexed petals and delicate stamensthat add texture and movement. Grows to 50cm.
- 1 × Nerine bowdenii 'Ostara':Ruffled, shell-pink flowers are a delight, and they appear very late in theseason adding some much-needed colour. Grows to 50cm.
Plant bulbs shallowly in well-drained soil, leaving the neck just above thesurface, spacing 10-15cm (4-6in) apart. Choose a sunny, sheltered positionwhere they won’t be shaded or crowded. They perform best in dense clumps, soavoid disturbing the roots once planted, and only lift and divide when theclump becomes overcrowded.
Mulch lightly to conserve moisture but keep the necks clear, and watersparingly during the growing season—overwatering can rot the bulbs. Afterflowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulbs for nextyear’s blooms.
Protect the crown from hard frosts with a generous layer of dry mulch afterflowering, or overwinter potted plants in an unheated greenhouse in colderregions.
