Deep, near-black flowers make a striking statement in early to mid-spring, standing out against the glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage.

The nodding, double blooms of Helleborus × hybridus 'Dark and Handsome' emerge on sturdy stems, creating a dramatic focal point in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or beneath deciduous trees.

This reliable and deer-resistant lenten rose thrives in dappled shade, gradually forming clumps in moist, well-drained soil. It is low-maintenance, once established, and long-lived, making it an excellent choice for naturalising.

Part of the Wedding Party Series, this hellebore provides valuable early-season colour and works beautifully in cut-flower arrangements when floated in water.
  • Garden care:
Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould or organic matter to the planting hole. Cut the old leaves back down to the ground in January or February as this will show off the new emerging flowers to best effect. It will also help to get rid of foliar diseases such as Hellebore leaf spot.

Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant in autumn and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.
    • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten; skin irritant
