Towering spikes of star-shaped, white or pink flowers on large panicles up to 60cm (2ft) long in midsummer. This striking, clump-forming perennial with its horse chestnut-like leaves looks great planted in the moist margins of a stream or pond.

Rodgersia aesculifolia is best grown in a sheltered, shady spot where it contrasts well with the lacy texture of ferns.

  • Garden care:
Rodgersias prefer a cool, partially shaded spot with soil that stays moist but not waterlogged, so enrich the planting area with plenty of well-rotted leaf mould or garden compost to improve structure and retain moisture. Plant them at the same depth as they were in their pots, water well after planting, and keep the soil consistently damp through the growing season, especially in dry spells.

Young foliage is a magnet for slugs, so protect new shoots in spring using environmentally friendly, humane deterrents. A mulch of leaf mould or compost applied in spring helps keep the soil cool and moist, while also feeding the plant. Lift and divide congested clumps in early spring if growth becomes crowded, replanting divisions immediately to keep them healthy and vigorous.

Rodgersias are generally hardy, but in colder regions a loose mulch of leaves or compost in winter offers extra protection for the crowns.
