Slender, tightly wrapped, cigar-like buds casually discard their flaky, papery sheaths to reveal emerging tender, silken leaves, which initially unfurl a pinkish purple before slowly starting to age and darken. Soft, hair like protrusions line the outermost edges of the leaves, and in time these hedging plants are smothered in gorgeous plum-toned foliage which later turns bronze and is often retained through the winter giving the plant a semi-evergreen appeal.

If left unclipped, These majestic plants are perfect for creating colourful, formal screens and boundaries, but if left un-clipped, these Fagus sylvatica 'Atropurpurea Group' will grow to make a tall, spreading trees.

  • Garden care:
Bareroot plants should be planted out as soon as possible, incorporating some well-rotted garden compost or horse manure into the planting hole. Firm the soil around the roots and stake firmly. Water in well and continue to water frequently during the following growing season.

Free-standing plants require very little pruning (unless they get too large for their allotted space), however hedges should be clipped in late summer or early autumn. Apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plants in spring.
    • Pets: Harmful if eaten
