Erythronium californicum 'White Beauty' looks wonderful when allowed to form naturalistic drifts in a woodland setting, and as they are reasonably vigorous in nature, they are also one of the easiest fawn lilies to grow.

Their leaves, which form a basal clump, are softly marbled, and it is from amongst these that the slender stems rise up in spring, each bearing up to 3 nodding white flowers. These are made up of strongly recurved and pointed tepals (petals), that surround a prominent cluster of white stamens. A truly elegant plant in every way.

  • Garden care:
Plant bulbs 10cm (4in) deep and 10cm (4in) apart in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, ideally in partial shade. Arrange in naturalistic drifts and leave undisturbed for several years to establish.

Plant potted plants in partial shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, setting plants at the same depth they were in their pots. Space them 20-30cm (8-12in) apart in naturalistic groups and water well after planting. Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould or compost in autumn to help conserve moisture and feed the roots. Leave plants undisturbed once established, and remove old foliage only after it has fully died back.

Avoid planting beneath thirsty trees or shrubs that dry out the soil in summer.
    • Humans/Pets: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
