  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: August to October
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This handsome, evergreen shrub has fluffy clusters of sky-blue flowers from August to October and small, glossy, bright green leaves. It has a strong, upright habit and is ideal for training on a sunny wall, or for the back of a south or west-facing shrub border.

Although Ceanothus 'Autumnal Blue' is one of the hardier varieties of Californian lilac, it does need protection from strong winds.

  • Garden care:
Ceanothus prefers a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil and dislikes sitting wet in winter, so avoid heavy soils prone to waterlogging. Once planted, water regularly during the first growing season to help establish, then reduce as it becomes more drought tolerant.

Avoid feeding with high-nitrogen fertilisers, as this can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. Prune in early spring by cutting back stems lightly to shape (avoid hard pruning into old wood unless wishing to regenerate from the base).

Mulch in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the woody stems.
