Each spring, the new foliage of this evergreen shrub emerges with an orange-red blush, but as it matures, it first turns yellow, and then mid-green. The leaves of Escallonia Glowing Embers are held on red-tinted stems, so the overall effect is very showy - particularly when the pink flowers appear in summer.
Escallonia thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, ideally in a sheltered spot to protect it from cold winds. It tolerates a range of soil types but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
Water regularly during its first growing season to help it establish, then only in prolonged dry spells. Once established, it's drought tolerant and low maintenance. Prune after flowering in late summer to maintain a tidy shape and encourage bushy growth.
In colder regions, choose a more sheltered position or provide some winter protection to avoid frost damage.
