With its branches smothered in vivid yellow flowers, this deciduous shrub is a really cheery sight on a shivery day in early spring. The flowers of Forsythia × intermedia 'Lynwood Variety' appear before the bright green leaves, covering the plant in a fine cloth of gold. Try it as part of a winter scheme, at the back of a border, where it can be seen from the house, or as an informal hedge.
Plant in well-drained soil and a sunny or lightly shaded spot, where it will establish quickly and give the best display of spring flowers. Water regularly during dry spells in the first year to help roots settle, and mulch in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
After flowering, prune by removing one or two of the oldest stems right back to the base to encourage strong new growth. Thin out any congested shoots from the centre to improve airflow, and cut back flowered shoots to a healthy bud to keep the shrub neat and compact.
