Ideal for compact, sheltered gardens craving an early spring flourish, Magnolia 'Watermelon' stands tall as a narrow, upright deciduous small tree. Its oval mid-green leaves provide a backdrop for the stunning display of huge 20 cm (8in) watermelon-hued blooms, appearing as bright pink, goblet-shaped, semi-double flowers. This magnolia flowers from an early age and occasionally surprises with a second flush of flowers during the summer months.
Magnolia 'Watermelon' prefers a sheltered position in full sun and it’s important to avoid frost pockets or wind tunnels that will damage the early buds. Prefers a neutral to acid soil. Requires minimal pruning. Remove any broken, diseased or crossing branches in spring. Mulch in spring with manure or leafmould, especially on dry soils.
