If allowed to grow naturally, Fagus sylvatica is a majestic plant that will grow to make a tall, spreading, deciduous tree. Its wavy-edged green leaves emerge from bud covered with silky hairs, but soon turn a glossy dark green - and then, in autumn, (see first image above), it takes on strong seasonal reds, yellows, and browns.
Mature beech trees offer significant opportunities for wildlife, providing cover, nesting sites and a food source for many birds.

Plant out as soon as possible, incorporating some well-rotted garden compost or horse manure into the planting hole. Firm the soil around the roots and stake firmly. Water in well and continue to water frequently during the following growing season.
After flowering in late spring or early summer, lightly cut back any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant and apply a generous 5–7cm (2–3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
