A large maidenhair tree variety with a striking upright, columnar growth habit and dense foliage with distinctive, fan-shaped, lush green leaves that provide ample coverage in summer. In autumn, 'Golden Spire' transforms with spectacular golden-yellow foliage and is non-fruiting, unlike some other ginkgos.
Ginkgo thrives in well-drained soil and benefits from a sunny or lightly shaded position. When planting, improve the soil with plenty of well-rotted compost to aid root establishment, and stake young trees securely to prevent wind damage.
Water regularly during the first few years, especially in dry spells, to help develop a strong root system. Once established, maidenhair tree is drought-tolerant, disease resistant and requires less maintenance. Minimal pruning is needed, but remove any broken, diseased, or crossing branches in late autumn or winter to maintain a balanced shape.
Mulch around the base in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, ensuring a healthy and long-lived tree.
