Masses of primrose yellow flowers resembling wild roses from late spring to mid autumn, above compact mounds of grey-green leaves. This pretty, pale yellow cinquefoil is an ideal long-flowering plant for a sunny, well-drained shrub or mixed border. Generally pest and disease free, although Potentilla fruticosa 'Primrose Beauty' tolerates partial shade it flowers best in full sun.

  • Garden care:
Plant woody shrub cinquefoil in full sun and well-drained soil, as they flower most freely in bright conditions and dislike sitting in wet ground. Water regularly during their first year to help them establish, then only during extended dry spells once mature. In spring, apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure to keep the soil in good condition and conserve moisture.

After flowering, trim the plant lightly, removing weak or spindly shoots and cutting a few of the oldest stems back to the base to keep a neat shape and encourage fresh growth.
