  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: fast
  • Flowering period: June to July
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

In early summer, upright poker-like flowerspikes appear, each tightly packed with pink flushed buds. Over the next few weeks, these open (starting from the base of the spike), to warm, apricot-orange flowers that are flushed with gold. Try teaming Lupinus Terracotta with deep plum or strong purple tones for a jaw-dropping display.

  • Garden care:
Plant lupins in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil, avoiding heavy clay. Water regularly while establishing, but once mature they become more tolerant to dry conditions.

Stake tall cultivated varieties with bamboo canes in spring before flowers appear, and remove faded blooms to encourage a second flush. Mulch lightly in winter to protect roots, and watch for slugs and snails on young growth.
    • Pets: TOXIC if eaten; Humans: Harmful if eaten
