Light up the garden with a trailing plant that brings colour and texture without any hard work. Muehlenbeckia complexa ‘Golden Girl’ is a semi-evergreen, or more commonly, deciduous twiner with a naturally spreading habit, making it ideal for ground cover, spilling from containers, or softening the edges of paths and raised beds.

Its fine, dark stems weave through small, golden-yellow leaves, each one slightly eclectic in shape, creating a relaxed, informal look that works well in modern and wildlife-friendly gardens. In late summer to autumn, subtle greenish flowers appear, followed on female plants by small white fruits that add another layer of interest.

Happy in sun or light shade, it grows well in most well-drained soils and quickly knits together to cover bare ground. Easy to care for and very forgiving, it only needs an occasional trim to keep it in check.

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Find a spot where it is sheltered from cold, drying winds, and provide support if you would like it to climb. No routine pruning is required unless it outgrows its allotted space, in which case it should be trimmed back immediately after flowering.
