The stems of the wonderful 'Mount Aso' are clothed with fuzzy pink catkins in late winter and early spring, which are impossible not to stroke each time you pass. These look their best as they start to swell in mid- to late winter and make a wonderfully eye-catching feature for the winter garden.

Even when the flowering has finished, the lush foliage, which has a silvery reverse, makes a great backdrop throughout the spring and summer for other plants that are just starting to bloom. Introduced by a breeder who specialises in cut flowers, the stems look equally impressive when cut and added to the vase.

  • Garden care:
Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded position with moist, fertile soil, working plenty of well-rotted compost into the planting hole. Keep the plant at the same depth as in the pot and water well while it establishes, as this willow enjoys consistent moisture. It grows happily in the ground or in a generous pot, provided the compost drains well but doesn’t dry out for long periods.

Mulch each spring to help retain moisture and support strong catkin display. Pruning needs are light, so in late autumn or winter remove any damaged, diseased or crossing stems and thin out older shoots to keep a tidy, open shape.
