  • A vigorous, dome-shaped, weeping, deciduous tree, with slender arching branches terminating in golden-yellow shoots creating a cascade of chartreuse colour at eye level once mature. Young yellow-green, lanceolate leaves mature to a glossy green and catkins, appear with the leaves in spring. A wide-spreading tree that grows best in full sun where a moist soil is available, and ideal along riverbanks and the margins of large ponds.

  • Garden care:
Plant weeping willow in a sunny, open position where its weeping shape has room to develop, choosing a site with moist, fertile soil that doesn’t dry out in summer. It grows very well beside ponds, streams and damp borders, but will also cope with average garden ground if watered regularly while establishing.

Add plenty of well-rotted compost to the planting hole, set the tree at its original depth, and water deeply for the first couple of seasons. Mulch each spring to hold moisture, and avoid placing it near drains or hard landscaping as willow roots spread widely.

Prune in winter only if needed, removing damaged, diseased or crossing branches and shortening any shoots that disrupt the natural shape.
