A more robust taller version of the much loved fire cracker plant, but the showy flowers are much larger than typical, and appear from late spring. Slender, cigar-shaped blooms in glowing orange-red cluster above neat, dark green foliage, each tube tipped with pale ash-white and finished with long, protruding stamens. The effect is bold but tidy, with an upright, bushy habit that fills containers or mixed borders with colour from late spring right through to the first frosts. Growing to around 90cm (3ft) tall, this lively tender perennial thrives in a sunny spot and keeps producing flowers with very little fuss.

Cuphea ignea ‘Fiesta’ works brilliantly in patio pots, hanging baskets or warm borders where its vibrant blooms attract pollinators and keep the display going for months. Plant in well-drained soil, water regularly, especially in containers, and enjoy a long season of colour. In cooler areas it’s often grown as a summer annual, though plants can be overwintered indoors if kept frost free.

  • Garden care:
Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly sheltered spot, and keep consistently moist but not waterlogged. Commonly grown as a tender annual, to overwinter, move the plant into a greenhouse, conservatory, or bright frost-free room. In early spring, cut back the flowered stems to within 2cm (about 1in) of last year’s growth to encourage fresh shoots.

No deadheading is required, though the plant will flower more vigorously with regular feeding using a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season.

Regular watering and occasional light pruning of straggly growth will help maintain a compact, bushy shape and a long flowering season.
