A compact, evergreen shrub with clusters of fragrant, white flowers in April and May and slightly aromatic, dark green leaves. This award-winning shrub is a particularly fragrant and free-flowering variety. Strongly upright in habit, Skimmia japonica 'Fragrans' works equally well in a shady shrub border or grown as a container plant.

  • Garden care:
When planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter to improve moisture retention, soil fertility and drainage. Skimmia prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, so avoid chalky conditions unless supplemented with ericaceous compost. Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells.

Minimal pruning is required, but you can lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Mulching in spring with compost or leaf mould will help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Protect from harsh winter winds to prevent leaf scorch, especially in colder regions.
