‘Potomac Red’ flaunts unique ruby blooms atop sturdy spires, originally bred for the cut flower market. This dramatic cultivar produces a profusion of tall slender stems adorned with ample dark buds that open to reveal striking, plush flowers presenting deep velvety folds in deep crimson. Though technically a tender perennial in warmer climates, most gardeners grow this snapdragon as a seasonal bedding plant where it excels in sunny, moist, but well-drained conditions.
For best results, pot up and grow on in a heated greenhouse or sunny windowsill until risk of frost has passed. Plant out and water your bedding plants early in the morning with a weak solution of a potash-rich fertiliser, such as Tomorite. Deadhead the flowers on a regular basis as this will encourage new growth and stop the plants putting all their energy into seed production.
