Soft pink, pincushion-like flowers on tall, wiry stems make this popular herbaceous perennial a standout choice for long-lasting summer colour. Its deeply lobed, mid-green leaves form a tidy clump, providing excellent contrast to its delicate blooms.

Astrantia 'Roma' is a vigorous grower with a longer flowering season than many other pink cultivars, returning reliably each year. It thrives in moisture-retentive, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, making it a great addition to mixed borders or naturalistic planting schemes.

Regular deadheading encourages repeat flowering, while leaving some spent blooms will allow attractive seed heads to form. A favourite among garden designers, such as Piet Oudolf, it pairs well with ornamental grasses and other perennials.

  • Garden care:
Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather, especially newly established plants.

Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant. Divided specimens may take some time to establish since they don't like having their roots disturbed.

Astrantia thrive in consistently moist soils and perform best in cool, partially shaded summer conditions.
