Strongly scented, star-shaped white flowers are followed by decorative seed-heads, so together provide a long period of interest. This herbaceous clematis is ideal spilling over the edge of a retaining wall, or scrambling through a mixed border. Initially purple, the foliage turns green as the plant matures, and looks wonderful laced through fresh floral arrangements. Try to plant Clematis recta 'Purpurea' near a walkway, so you can enjoy its perfume each time you pass.

  • Garden care:
Clematis are happiest when their roots are kept cool and moist, so try to plant them where the base of the plants will be lightly shaded by other, lower-growing species. Cut back the stems to the base of the plant each winter and apply a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the plant, avoiding the immediate crown. Use twiggy prunings, ring stakes or bamboo canes to provide support.
  • To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
