Euonymus phellomanus is a relatively large deciduous shrub, that's easy to grow - and really showy in autumn. Commonly known as the winged spindle tree (because of its unusual stems, which have corky growths that look a little like small wings), its leaves turn dazzling shades in autumn. The vibrant and long-lasting, lipstick pink fruits, which develop in late summer or autumn, and split to reveal bright orange seeds (which are attractive to birds), are also really decorative. It's useful for informal hedging, but if given room to develop, it will make a stunning garden specimen that is sure to attract a lot of admiration.

  • Garden care: When planting E. phellomanus incorporate some well-rotted compost or manure, and mycorrhizal fungi into the planting hole. Lightly prune the top few cm of young plants in mid to late spring to encourage bushy growth and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
  • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
