Spreading slowly by underground rhizomes to form a clump of rich green maple-like foliage, this attractive perennial also produces pretty sprays of bell-shaped white flowers in spring. Towards the end of summer, the foliage takes on rich claret tones before it starts to die back and sometimes this can be quite dazzling.

Originating from wooded areas in N. E. Asia, Mukdenia rossii 'Karasuba' provides valuable groundcover in shadier positions and looks particularly good when planted in drifts.

  • Garden care:
Plant in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in partial to full shade, where it will be protected from strong sunlight that can scorch the leaves. It thrives in woodland-style borders or near water features where the soil stays cool and damp. When planting, enrich the soil with compost or leaf mould to improve structure and retain moisture.

Water regularly, especially during dry spells, as this plant dislikes drying out. Mulch annually in spring with organic matter to conserve moisture and feed the roots. Lift and divide congested clumps in early spring before new growth appears to maintain vigour. Protect the young foliage from slugs and snails, and remove any damaged leaves to keep the plant looking fresh.

In autumn, allow the attractive foliage to fade naturally before cutting back old leaves as new shoots emerge in spring.
