From June to August, bright yellow, buttercup-like flowers on stiff stems above leathery, deep green, floating or submerged leaves similar to those of a water lily. The flowers of this vigorous, deep water aquatic plant smell strongly of alcohol - hence its intriguing common name. It copes well in sun or partial shade, but needs space to spread out, making it ideal for a large pond or lake.
Young or small plants (in 1-3 litre pots) should sit around 30-45cm (1-1½ft) deep, while established plants in 10 litre pots can be positioned up to 90cm (3ft) below the water surface. This gives them enough light when young and greater stability as they mature.
Brandy bottle prefers still or slow-moving water, so avoid placing near pumps or fountains. Remove yellowing leaves and spent flowers regularly to keep the plant tidy, and divide large or congested clumps in late spring or summer to maintain healthy growth and flowering.
