A wonderful addition to the sunny shrub border, Sophora Sun King is a spreading, bushy evergreen, which puts on a dazzling display in late winter and early spring when its long-lasting flowers appear. Looking luminous in the low light, they're offset beautifully against the backdrop of rich green, pinnate foliage.
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first few years while it establishes, then it becomes relatively drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base in spring to retain moisture and protect roots, especially in colder regions.
This tree is borderline hardy, so provide some winter protection in exposed locations, such as a sheltered wall or temporary fleece. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain a balanced shape, but avoid heavy pruning as it flowers on new growth.
