The rich green leaves of this new star jasmine start turning wine-red as the temperatures drop in autumn, and this colouring intensifies throughought winter before reverting back to green again in spring. Like the species, it will still produce an abundance of highly scented, white star-shaped flowers in summer, but Winter Ruby is said to be a little hardier than most (the breeders claim that it has survived in temperatures as low as -17°C), so it may be a tougher option for colder regions. It's also a more compact form, so it's definitely a great choice for a smaller garden or larger pot.

  • Garden care: After flowering has finished prune back to fit the available space. In frost-prone areas, grow in pots of loam-based potting compost such as John Innes No.2 and move to a sheltered spot in winter.
