Forming a bushy mound of evergreen purple foliage, this handsome shrub also produces pink, witch hazel-like flowers from late winter to mid-spring. These have a sweet scent and offer a pretty contrast to the colourful foliage. Originating from woodlands in China, Japan and Burma, they will benefit from a partially shaded spot with protection from the worst of the winter weather.

  • Garden care:
Loropetalum requires minimal pruning but benefits from a light trim after flowering to promote bushy growth and maintain its shape.

Plant in acidic to neutral, well-drained soil in a sheltered position with partial shade or full sun. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the plant establishes, and mulch annually with organic matter to retain moisture and improve soil quality.

Protect from cold winds and avoid pruning into old wood to ensure healthy growth and abundant flowering. Protect from frost damage with a double layer of horticultural fleece during prolonged or severe frost.
