The foliage of this colourful semi-evergreen shrub emerges with an apricot flush, but soon turns green with an irregular cream edge. In winter, when the temperatures drop, the foliage changes colour once more, this time taking on distinctive red tones. This, coupled with the scented white flowers, which are held by pink calyces (that are retained long after the flowers have faded), makes Sunshine Daydream a very decorative abelia for borders or pots.
Choose a sunny position in well-drained soil. Incorporate well-rotted compost or manure and a sprinkling of mycorrhizal fungi into the planting hole to encourage strong root development. Water regularly during the first year to help establish the plant.
Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong flowering. In autumn, lightly trim back faded blooms to maintain a neat shape. In early spring, remove any dead or damaged stems and apply a mulch of organic matter around the base to conserve moisture and improve soil health.
In colder regions, provide winter protection for young plants by adding a layer of mulch around the base.
