This vigorous, upright shrub is best known for its vivid coral-red stems, which bring strong winter colour after the leaves have dropped. In late spring to early summer, it produces flat clusters of creamy-white flowers, followed by occasional white berries.

The dark green foliage takes on reddish-purple tones in autumn, adding seasonal interest before revealing the colourful stems. Cornus alba 'Sibirica' is ideal for mass planting, boundary hedging or as part of a winter border scheme.

It performs best in full sun or light shade and should be cut back hard in early spring to maintain its stem colour intensity.

Garden care:
Incorporate some well-rotted garden compost when planting and scatter some mycorrhizal fungi on the rootball to aid establishment and water in well.

Leave the plant unpruned for the first year after planting, but once established, and for best stem colour, cut new growth back hard to within 5-7cm (2-3in) from the ground in March and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant.

Please note that coppiced plants will not produce flowers and berries in the season following pruning.
