Eutrochium maculatum 'Riesenschirm' is a superb, architectural perennial with huge heads of dark pink-purple flowers in late summer held above strong burgundy stems.

Commonly referred to as 'Joe pye weed', it's perfect for adding height and presence towards the back of the border, acting as a magnet for butterflies. The fluffy seedheads that form as the flowers fade will add futher interest well into winter.

  • Garden care:
Plant in full sun or partial shade in deep, humus-rich soil that stays consistently moist. Space plants 75-90cm (30-36in) apart as they form tall, spreading clumps. Water regularly during dry spells and mulch in spring with compost or leaf mould to conserve moisture.

Cut back old stems to the base in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges, and divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring to maintain vigour and prevent overcrowding. Taller plants may need staking in exposed sites.
