A large deciduous shrub, a native of European hedgerows, from which the wood was traditionally used for making spindles. This plant really comes into its own in autumn and winter, when its dark green leaves turn blazing scarlet, while insignificant summer flowers are followed by gorgeous, orange-pink, winged fruit which remain long after the leaves have fallen.

Plant Euonymus europaeus 'Red Cascade' in view of the house, where its vibrant display can be appreciated. It's also wonderful in a winter border among early-flowering bulbs or shrubs grown for winter interest. Tolerant of partial shade, its autumn colour is spectacular when grown in full sun.

  • Garden care:
When planting, dig a generous hole and mix some well-rotted compost or manure into the soil to enrich it before backfilling. Also incorporate mycorrhizal fungi to boost establishment. After planting, apply 5-7cm (2-3in) of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Prune after flowering, as needed, to maintain shape and control size, removing any old, crossing, or misdirected stems. Dormant pruning before spring helps rejuvenate the plant, but heavy tip pruning is generally not required unless shaping is desired. Thinning the interior improves airflow and overall health.
    • Humans/Pets: Harmful if eaten
