Offering year round form and colour with its lustrous foliage, this acid-loving evergreen shrub looks truly spectacular when the pink-tinted buds have opened in late spring to masses of dazzling white flowers. Retaining its compact stature and growing to just a metre or so in height, Kalmia latifolia f. myrtifolia 'Elf' is a great little plant for areas of reliably moist shape, where little else will grow.
Plant in a sheltered spot with acidic, well-drained soil and partial to full sun, avoiding exposed, windy sites. When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and backfill with ericaceous compost or a soil mix suitable suitable for acid-loving plants, keeping the crown level with the soil surface.
Remove faded blooms regularly to prolong flowering, and prune minimally—cut back any overgrown branches gradually over two to three years in spring. Apply a generous mulch of well-rotted leaf mould or composted pine needles around the base each spring to conserve moisture and maintain soil acidity.
