Upright stems form a broad, tidy clump with neat, three-part blue-green foliage that stays clean through the season. Tall flowering spikes carry rich reddish-purple blooms in late spring, giving a clear vertical line that suits mixed borders and prairie-style layouts.

Baptisia ‘Burgundy Blast’ follows with firm, dark seed pods that add interest if left to mature. Plants reach around 1m (3ft) and stay compact with minimal care.

Grow in dry, well-drained soil with full sun or light shade. Once settled, the deep tap root brings good drought tolerance, so avoid moving it. Expect a slow start, as clumps often take a few years to bulk up. Butterflies visit the blooms whilst deer tend to leave it alone.

  • Garden care:
Plant Baptisia in a sunny, well-drained spot where it can stay undisturbed, as it develops a deep tap root that improves drought tolerance but makes transplanting difficult.

While it's frost hardy, younger plants benefit from protection in colder areas—apply a thick mulch of well-rotted organic matter in late autumn and use fleece during hard frosts.

These perennials prefer poor to moderately fertile soil and dislike being heavily fertilised or waterlogged. Lift and divide large clumps only in early spring if absolutely necessary.
