This deciduous shrub has pretty, grey-green leaves with white margins and produces small, creamy-white flowers in May and June, however Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' is primarily grown for the vivid red stems that are revealed when the leaves fall in autumn.
A lovely dogwood, it looks stunning planted in groups in damp areas of the garden, beside water, or in a winter border. It's at its best in a sunny spot, and it works particularly well with orange or purple-stemmed dogwoods.

Garden care:
Incorporate some well-rotted garden compost when planting and scatter some mycorrhizal fungi on the rootball to aid establishment and water in well.
Leave the plant unpruned for the first year after planting, but once established, and for best stem colour, cut new growth back hard to within 5-7cm (2-3in) from the ground in March and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant.
