This popular perennial climber is smothered in showy sprays of scarlet flowers from June to September, set against a backdrop of grey-green leaves. A fast grower, Lathyrus latifolius 'Red Pearl' looks lovely scrambling over a sunny wall or through an evergreen shrub, although initially it needs to be tied onto supports.
Unlike the annual sweet pea, it comes back year after year with bountiful colour, but sadly, the flowers are not scented.

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
Plant perennial sweet peas in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, adding plenty of well-rotted organic matter to the location and backfill. Water regularly in dry spells to help them establish. Pinch out the tips of young shoots to promote bushy growth, and tie in stems as they climb.
After flowering, remove spent flowers to encourage more, and cut the whole plant down to ground level in early spring to keep it tidy and vigorous.
